Abstract
Increased numbers of plasma cells are often found in the bone marrow and peripheral blood of patients with multiple myeloma and, occasionally, in those with granulomatous diseases and other chronic disorders. Rarely, however, have plasma cells been reported in the urine. We report a case of multiple myeloma in which numerous plasma cells were found in the urine. PATIENT SUMMARY A 65-year-old woman had been in good health until April 1973, when she noted the onset of pain in the lower part of the back. During the next two months, she experienced an 8.1 kg (18 lb) weight loss. She was treated for a "kidney infection" with antibiotics in May. In late June, the diagnosis of multiple myeloma was made on the basis of a monoclonal spike on urine electrophoresis and multiple osteolytic defects on skeletal x-ray films.
