Dialysis Acidosis

Abstract
Metabolic acidosis developed in six patients during prolonged hemodialysis for drug intoxications. The acidosis presumably occurred as a result of bacterial contamination of the dialysis bath. Bath pH was progressively reduced as marked bacterial contamination occurred, and the pH of the blood leaving the coil was markedly less than that entering the coil. The acidotic state was corrected by discontinuing dialysis or by eradicating the bacterial contamination in the bath. Close attention must be paid to the pH status of patients undergoing prolonged hemodialysis in centers which have a static-reservoir type of dialysis tank.
