Abstract
Recently published multifilter infra-red observations of various categories of young stars are discussed. These data are used to suggest a possible mechanism for the infra-red emission, to derive bolometric magnitudes for young stars, and, by assuming that all these stars are on their radiative tracks in the HR diagram, to present a model of early stellar evolution. In this model the infall of material from a circumstellar shell surrounding the protostar, and mass loss from the central core, are the principal processes in terms of which the observations are interpreted.
