Abstract
The uptake of [alpha] -aminoisobutyric acid (AIB), an unmetabolizable amino acid, by rat pituitary glands was measured and compared with that of the diaphragm. The uptake was about 5 times greater in the pituitary than in the diaphragm. Thyroidectomy stimulated AIB uptake by the pituitary about 28% and the stimulation was depressed by sc injection of 20 [mu]g/100 g body weight of T4, The effect of T4 was evident in 3 hr. and lasted for 24 hr. Neither thyroidectomy nor T4 administration produced a clear effect on the diaphragm. These results suggest that perhaps the thyroid gland exerts its control upon the pituitary gland by influencing the uptake of amino acids. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
