Abstract
This article describes a procedure for regional landscape management. In a discussion of its application, the authors describe a study completed for the Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges region in Victoria, Australia. The procedures were developed and applied to provide information and guidance to planners concerned with protecting the character of a rural landscape under pressure from urban development. Within the general description of the study, detailed discussion of the quantitative procedure for assessing scenic quality is provided. In summary, the main objective of the Landscape Principles Study is to assess the landscape character and potential changes in that character, and to provide means for protection of the general Landscape Values of the region.
