Structure—Property Relations in Free Machining Steels

Abstract
Variations in machining characteristics accompany differences in microstructure in resulfurized free machining steels. In this paper a relation between machining properties of this class of steels and their principal microstructural features has been derived. The quantitative relation obtained takes into account the dispersion parameters associated with the free machining inclusions, oxides and other phases. Preliminary testing of the model with available data demonstrates that the proposed model is adequate and satisfactory.
