Identifications of Radio Sources with Bright Galaxies

Abstract
The positions of radio sources in the 4C catalogue have been compared with those of bright galaxies in the catalogues of Vorontsov-Velyaminov and Zwicky and a number of identifications are suggested. Several additional sources observed in a survey using a pencil beam instrument have also been identified with galaxies in the lists. The coincidences are mainly with ‘strong’ radio galaxies but a few ‘normal’ galaxies are included in the pencil beam survey. Thirty-six sources with pencil beam data form an homogeneous sample with which the distribution of radio luminosity among sources of this type has been investigated, and modifications to Longair's model luminosity function are derived.
