Abstract
It is shown that two simultaneously applied laser pulses suffice to realise a two-qubit phase gate and SWAP operation between ground states of cold trapped ions. To improve the gate fidelity, quantum error correction can be applied but would be very time-consuming. It is therefore proposed to stabilise the desired time evolution with the help of dissipation channels, artificially introduced into the system. This affords gate operation times of the same order of magnitude as the inverse coupling constant of the ions to a common vibrational mode.
