Abstract
A sample of weathered, surface‐retorted oil shale was analyzed for organic compounds using capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/computer techniques. Various biological markers were identified including isoprenoid hydrocarbons, stearanes and terpanes, along with other classes of organic compounds including alkanes, fatty acids, alkylbenzenes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The origin and environmental significance of these compounds are discussed. Keywords
