Botfly Infections in a Population of Peromyscus leucopus

Abstract
Host-parasite relationships between the botfly, Cuterebra sp., and a population of the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus lencopus, were observed in central Connecticut from 1963 to 1967. Infection was restricted to a period from July to September; percentages of infection varied from 7.8 to 73.7 There was no correlation between density of the mice and percentage of botfly infections. Infected mice (both single and multiple infections) had a lower survival rate than did uninfected individuals. Mice living in a swamp had significantly fewer infections than those in the upland. If botfly infections exert a significant influence on white-footed mouse populations, such influence apparently is not density dependent.
