Abstract
The Y chromosome is known to induce testis differentiation in Eutheria and Metatheria. Recently, in Eutheria, a gene (Sry), which is the major candidate to be the testis-determining gene, has been identified. We present evidence indicating that DNA sequences homologous to Sry are male specific in two marsupial species. This finding leads us to conclude that Sry also is the testis-determining gene in Metatheria. Keywords
