Abstract
Parathyroid extract (PTE) has been injected intramuscularly into 5 normal subjects and 6 patients with hypoparathyroidism receiving supplements of calcium by mouth. The effect on plasma and urinary calcium, magnesium and phosphate has been observed. PTE produced an initial fall in urinary calcium and magnesium followed by a rise. The concentration of serum calcium and magnesium increased significantly with PTE administration at this dose. This effect was more readily apparent in hypoparathyroid patients than in normal subjects and confirms that PTE may increase the renal tubular reabsorption of magnesium as well as calcium in man. Keywords
