THE FOLLOWING report is an analysis of the end-results obtained in the treatment of fractures of the shaft of the tibia and fibula at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond, Va., for the years 1947 and 1948 and the first six months of 1949. A total of 135 fractures in 123 patients were treated, 12 of the patients having suffered fractures of the lower part of both legs. Only fractures of the shafts of these bones are included in this study; fractures of the condyles, plateau, and malleolus of the tibia have been excluded. Only patients above the age of 10 years have been included in this study as it was not felt that such fractures in patients below the age of 10 years presented any particular treatment problems in general. A teaching hospital, this institution receives a great majority of all accident and traumatic work in the area.
