Abstract
A patient with typhoid fever who had a positive blood culture for Salmonella typhi after a 3-week course of chloramphenicol developed clinical and roentgenographic findings of congestive heart failure. Electrocardiographic changes were consistent with a diagnosis of myocarditis. The patient responded to treatment with ampicillin, digitalis and a diuretic. This complication, considered rare in the past, may be seen with increased frequency in the presence of chloramphenicol-resistant typhoid. Keywords
