Abstract
A medium containing 0.25% lab-lemco, 0.5% dextrose in 2% agar has been found to induce early development of clearly recognisable pigment by 30 strains of Trichophyton rubrum. This medium is more satisfactory than corn-meal dextrose agar for pigment production and on it growth is suitable for study of morphological and other physiological criteria in the identification of this fungus. On the medium T. rubrum produces all four characteristic pigments but there is stimulation of a peach-coloured fraction. Comparison with strains of T. mentagrophytes also showed that this medium induces a reproportioning of the pigments. Pigmentation is maximal between pH 6.5 and 7.5. On this medium as also on standard media pigmentation is inhibited by 0.5% tryptose. Keywords
