Abstract
The immunologic properties of pituitary FSH and FSH extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women were studied. The 2 preparations were found to behave identically with labeled pituitary FSH and antiserum to pituitary FSH but differently with labeled urinary FSH and antiserum to urinary FSH. This difference in immunologic behavior was attributed to the existence of antigenic determinants in the urinary molecule which are not present in the hormone of pituitary origin and which have induced antibody specific to urinary FSH. A system using labeled and unlabeled pituitary FSH and antiserum produced against pituitary FSH was found to be suitable for the radioimmunoassay of FSH in both serum and urine. However, a system consisting of labeled and unlabeled urinary FSH and the antiserum to urinary FSH used in the present study was discovered to be applicable solely to determinations of the urinary metabolite.
