Abstract
Meiosis in the teliospores of Hemileia vastatrix is seen to differ from the rust fungi where the basidium is external. The chromosome number is larger than has been reported for most of the Basidiomycetes. The irregularities recorded under natural conditions suggest some disturbance in the important phase in the life cycle of the fungus. Occurrence of uninucleate and binucleate basidiospores, the later being frequent and persistence of the same nuclear status even after germination and formation of secondary basidiospores points out that the role of each of these have to be fully elucidated. Hence work in various lines is suggested to understand the nature and behaviour of the fungus. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
