A Thermal-Marking Technique for Juvenile Salmonids

Abstract
A simple easily mastered branding technique has been developed which has enabled the placement of a wide variety of easily seen marks on the dorsal skin surfaces of fingerllng salmonids. Such marks have been observed for periods up to 18 months. The branding markers used were made from silver and copper metals and are described and illustrated. These were heated only in boiling water. Distinctive marks, which are illustrated, were produced by lightly applying the heated figures for about one and one half seconds to the skin surfaces of anesthetized fingerling salmonids. Localized changes in skin pigmentation at the exact sites of contact faithfully reproduced the configurations of the branding markers. The technique has been used successfully in the laboratory and in the field.
