Abstract
Serum uric acid is known to be elevated in a variety of diseases, including those in which there is repeated destruction of nuclei of cells. A case is presented in which the cause for admission to the hospital was renal colic. Intravenous urogram revealed numerous radiolucent stones in the right renal pelvis. Splenomegaly and a white blood count of 240,000 established the diagnosis of chronic myloid leukemia. Alkalization of the urine and treatment of the leukemia with 1,4-dimethanesulfonoxybutane resulted in disappearance of the renal calculi, reduction of the serum uric acid to normal levels and remission of the leukemia. Keywords
