Abstract
The negative polarity of a cortical response resulting from a surface cortical stimulus (dendritic potential) and the ensuing slow negativity (150-300 mseconds) was studied in rabbits and cats with d. c. recording. By comparison with dendritic potential the slow negativity was found to have higher threshold, deeper reversal in the cortex (dendritic potential = 0.15 - 0.4 mm sub-surface, slow negativity = 0.7 - 0.9 mm sub-surface) and a different drug sensitivity. Chloral hydrate (150-200 mg intravenously) augmented the slow negativity and depressed the dendritic potential. From this evidence we conclude the slow negativity is an independent post-synaptic excitation process of unusually long time course. Keywords
