Abstract
The use of methadone as a treatment for opioid dependence is reviewed. Outcome evaluation is hampered by the lack of clarity in determining the goals of methadone maintenance, or how it is intended to achieve them. Directions for future research into counselling services, attitude measures, outcome scales and health changes are indicated. Keywords
