Abstract
According to the unidimensional perspective of the earliest works on locus of control, internality is an asset and externality, a liability. Levenson''s model (1973) argues for a multidimensional approach that counters this linear perspective. Along with internality, Levenson distinguishes two types of externality: "powerful others" and "chance." The reliability and validity of the French-Canadian version of Levenson''s scale were established in two studies of middle class adults (n = 61 and n = 233). Following the first study, the scale was revised: this revision resulted in improvements in internal consistency, content homogeneity, and construct validity. The performance of the French-Canadian version of Levenson''s instrument is found to be comparable to that of the original version. The importance of utilizing the appropriate statistical models of analysis, in order to benefit fully from the multidimensional model of control, is emphasized.
