Abstract
Penicillin V is produced by fermentation of Penicillium chrysogenum . It is more readily absorbed than Penicillin G and is taken orally as the potassium salt. A beta-lactam antibiotic, penicillin V is active against gram-positive cocci, including nonpenicillin resistant streptococcal, staphylococcal, and enterococcal species. It has activity against some gram positive and gram negative anaerobic organisms and certain spirochetes. While penicillin V displays limited activity against gram negative aerobes, such as Neisseria species, it is rarely used for these infections. Because penicillin V is only available in an oral formulation, its use is limited to mild to moderate infections involving the throat, respiratory tract, and soft tissue. Its use is limited mainly to gram positive infections. Keywords
