Abstract
Brief intervention for the less dependent problem drinker is considered in terms of its appropriateness and focus. The pitfalls in screening then advising drinkers who consume alcohol excessively are considered. These drinkers are not a homogeneous group, but differ as to whether or not they have problems caused by drinking and whether or not they acknowledge that they are drinking too much. Suggestions are made about finding a context for dialogue which is meaningful to the drinker and which may motivate him to take action to reduce alcohol consumption. Keywords
