Monensin inhibits synthesis of proteoglycan, but not of hyaluronate, in chondrocytes

Abstract
Monensin (10 nM-1 .mu.M) inhibited the incorporation of [35S]sulfate and [3H]glucosamine into proteoglycans by rat chondrosarcoma cells, but the incorporation of [3H]glucosamine into hyaluronate was unaffected. Hyaluronate synthesis apparently occurs in a cell compartment separate from chondroitin sulfate synthesis.
