Abstract
The discussion is based on 80 cases of myasthenia gravis. Part I discusses the neurotic states arising as a reaction to the myasthenia graivs (depression, psychasthenia, hypochondriacal neurosis, neurasthenia, vegetative neurosis, hysteria). In Part II the specific mixed clinical pictures are discussed which appear when the myasthenia gravis has arisen in an already premorbid neurasthenic personality. In the 3rd group of individuals the specific changes in personality or personality structure are discussed which develop under the influence of the illness itself (reaction of the total personality to the situation, the personality reaction to the conflicts which arise, the problem of the disabling effect and the dependence, the possibilities of adaptation). In the 4th section, the psychic phenomena are described which can be observed during the crisis. Along with psychic events directly linked with the crisis and of primary biological origin, secondary psychic events and personality reactions which may set in after the crisis are considered. The 5th section is concerned with the actual life and the problems otherwise gathering round the life of patients with myasthenia gravis (work, social interaction, sex, pregnancy, preparation for operations). The separate sections are illustrated with relevant case histories.
