Abstract
It has been possible to incorporate shellac up to 25 phr in OE-SBR without any difficulty on a roll mill by properly adjusting the temperature of rolls. Shellac acts as a lubricant and a processing aid at higher temperatures. A higher amount of shellac can be used safely as the stock becomes less and less scorchy. It improves tear resistance, tensile strength and hardness of the gum stock. Greater abrasion loss may restrict its use even though other properties are rather good. Due to the presence of lac dye in shellac stocks of different pastel shades may be obtained. From the present study it appears that shellac may be used as an extender and may replace rubber by 20 parts quite advantageously. Keywords
