Abstract
All patients in the 2 largest venereal disease clinics in Manchester, England except those infected with syphilis were questioned during the year ending June 30, 1956 to determine the number who had been exposed to prostitutes. Gonorrhea, non-gonococcal urethritis. minor conditions requiring treatment and patients coming for reassurance who had no venereal disease symptoms are included. Of 876 exposures to risk of infection from prostitutes 376 resulted in infections with gonorrhea, 137 in non-gonococcal urethritis and 144 in minor conditions requiring some treatment. In addition, 219 patients exposed to prostitutes came to the clinic for exclusion of infection and reassurance. Of the male cases of gonorrhea 30% resulted from exposure to prostitutes. Keywords
