Abstract
A single, isologous pituitary gland was transplanted adjacent to the mammary gland of the right inguinal region in intact and ovariec-tomized 60-day old Strong A mice; all animals were killed at 60 days post-transplantation. Whole mounts were prepared of the right and left inguinal mammary glands of each mouse. Mammary tissue of the right inguinal glands in close proximity to the grafts showed a marked lobulo-alveolar and duct development in intact hosts. The left glands of the same hosts were comparable to nongrafted intact controls. Mammary glands from the graft-bearing side of ovariectomized hosts covered a greater area than glands from the opposite side of the same host, but only a minimal end-bud proliferation was observed adjacent to the transplants. Thus the ovary is necessary for maximal mammary gland response to the direct effect of a pituitary isograft in Strong A mice. Keywords
