Prognostic Value of the Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) Reaction in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the prognostic significance of the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reactivity of bone marrow lymphoblasts obtained at the time of initial treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The prognostic significances of a number of clinical variables were also studied in the same children. In this series of 38 children, the only significant variable was the initial leukocyte count. A high leukocyte count at the time of diagnosis was associated with a poor prognosis. The PAS reactivity was of no significant prognostic value.
