Abstract
The pulsed molecular beam technique has been used to measure speed and angle‐resolved differential cross sections for scattering of Ar by Cl2, over the range of initial relative kinetic energies from 0.09 to 0.16 eV. Angular rainbows are observed at small scattering angles. At large scattering angles, the product speed distributions at constant center‐of‐mass scattering angles display rotational rainbow structure which corresponds to a large fraction of the initial relative kinetic energy appearing as rotational energy in the Cl2 product. The large‐angle data may be interpreted in terms of the classical rigid‐ellipsoid model, which expresses the anisotropy of the potential energy surface with a single parameter. Keywords
