Abstract
Variance and error analysis of energy estimators for path integral Monte Carlo simulations is presented, taking the harmonic oscillator as an example and using the standard Metropolis sampling algorithm. A quantitative treatment of the persistence of correlation in the samples leads to conclusions that can be of general relevance for error estimates in this kind of computation. Keywords
