Abstract
Eleven cases of pigmented nodular synovitis occurring in non-articular sites proximal to the wrists and ankles were seen in consultation over a 10-yr. period. The lesions ranged from 1.5 to 14 cm. in greatest dimension, with various degrees of encapsulation. Histologically there was a striking similarity to the familiar pigmented villonodular tenosynovitis of the fingers. It is important to differentiate proximal pigmented nodular synovitis from sarcoma to avoid unnecessary surgery.
