Automatic Recognition of Engineering Drawings and Maps

Abstract
This chapter discusses the techniques related to the recognition of engineering drawings and maps. The main reason for the lack of success is that the algorithms needed to carry out automatic recognition of complex drawings tend to be unwieldy. The category, automatic recognition of maps, is the most rewarding, especially for urban planning and for gas, water, electric, and telephone utility management. Automatic digitizers based on these techniques are also presented, together with the state of the art in the application of drawing-recognition techniques. Grid locking is one such postprocessing technique and are discussed. To effectively use the design data contained in such drawings, automatic recognition of hand-drawn plant diagrams is considered as being an initial data input for a CAD system.
