Abstract
Thirty-five of 47 ankle joint endoprostheses implanted between 1977 and 1984 due to joint destructions caused by rheumatic diseases, were followed up. The most impressive result - as is usual with endoprosthetic applications - was represented by alleviation of pain. With increasing observation period, x-ray film revealed a distinct absorption margin especially in the range of the tibia component, mostly without any clinical signs of loosening. Mobility was controlled both clinically and by x-ray film and remained below expectations with a value of very nearly 20.degree. (+ 5.degree. in the intertarsal region). Compared with the early postoperative findings this represents a marked reduction. The possible reasons for this reduction are discussed. On the whole, the patients are much more content and satisfied with the results than one would expect on the basis of the objective findings.
