Esophageal Hiatus Diaphragmatic Hernia

Abstract
The purpose of this report is to evaluate our experience in the selection of patients with esophageal hiatus diaphragmatic hernia for surgical therapy. These have been operated upon during the years of surgical training of one of us (E. J. H.), during which time cinefluoroscopy has been available to us. One cannot discuss this subject properly without first crediting chronologically S. W. Harrington, Winklestein, and Allison for their original basic contributions leading to the recognition, indications for treatment, and principles of repair of this disorder, and to the later extensive clinical experiences of Effler and Groves, Paulson, Shaw and Kee, Crawford and DeBakey, and J. L. Herrington, Jr. We have been influenced as well by the well-documented reports of others such as Berman, in numbers more comparable to our own. However, during the period of this experience, four articles have appeared which may serve as a background for the analysis
