Abstract
Studies of crack growth behavior have shown that fatigue resistance (crack growth rate, crack initiation time) can be very sensitive to the environment. For example, while the shape of the waveform is generally unimportant in constant amplitude fatigue testing in normal air-conditioned rooms, there are many situations with moderately “hostile” environments, where a small change of waveform profile (changing the time to and at the higher stress levels in each cycle) will cause a significant change in crack growth rate.
