Abstract
Summary An accurate and sensitive method for enumeration of infective plaque forming units of respiratory syncytial virus, utilizing agar-overlaid HEp-2 monolayers in Petri dishes, is described. Small macroscopic plaques were observed 9 days after infection, and attained a final diameter of 2 mm and maximum number by the 11th or 12th day. By use of the technic of plaque reduction, it was possible to detect amounts of neutralizing antibody to RS virus hitherto not measurable by the use of standard endpoint dilution methods. Keywords
