UTILIZATION OF RADIOACTIVE LIPIDES BY NORMAL AND HYPOPHYSECTOMIZED RATS1

Abstract
The ability of normal and hypophysectomized rats to utilize octanoic acid and trilaurin labelled with radioactive carbon was studied. Recently hypophysectomized rats and normal rats had similar metabolic rates and used intraperit. admd. octanoic acid at an extremely rapid and approx. equal rate. Rats with long-standing hypophysectomy had extremely low rates of CO2 production, low absolute rate of octanoic acid utilization but high utilization of octanoic acid in a relative comparison based on CO2 production. Ingestion of 1% desiccated thyroid in the diet of rats with long-standing hypophysectomy resulted in a great increase in CO2 production and an increased absolute rate of octanoic acid utilization, but no increase in relative utilization of octanoic acid based on CO2 production. Hypophysectomy of long duration reduced the absolute rate of trilaurin utilization slightly but allowed a slightly increased utilization above normal in terms of relative CO2 production. Hypophysectomized rats maintained themselves approx. as well on a diet with low-fat, high-carbohydrate levels as on a diet deficient in carbohydrate but with a high-fat level.
