On the origin of the lipoproteins in the cerebrospinal fluid

Abstract
Opinions differ on the origin of the lipoproteins in the cerebrospinal fluid. In an attempt to elucidate this question, 59 cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients with and without neurologic disorders were studied by microimmunoelectrophoresis for the presence of lipoproteins. No immunologic difference was found between the serum and the cerebrospinal fluid with respect to [alpha]1-lipoprotein, which was demonstrated in all cases, and the [beta]-lipoprotein, which was only demonstrable in the presence of neurologic disorders. These lipoproteins thus appear to originate from the serum and not from nervous tissue.
