Influence of Experimental Design on Results of Palatability Studies

Abstract
Forty-one young bovines were used in 12 cafeteria-type experiments. The amount of each feed chosen was partially dependent on the availability of the feed. Thus when more than 2 choices are offered in a cafeteria-type study, results may be biased estimates of the relative palatability of the feeds. This is due to 1 feed having an effect on the apparent palatability of another. Accordingly, it is recommended that when reasonably precise and unbiased data are needed only 2 feeds be included in a cafeteria experiment.
