Abstract
Previous studies have shown that about 80% of the total weight of nondialyzable material in normal human urine is accounted for by carbohydrate components and protein. This paper presents the mean values for nitrogen, fucose, hexosamine, hexose and hexuronic acid in dialyzed aliquots of 24 hour urine collections in 8 normal male subjects between the ages of 20 and 30 years. The results (mean [plus or minus] standard deviation between subjects, mg/24 hours) were as follows: Nitrogen 35.89 [plus or minus] 8.59; fucose 6.18 [plus or minus] 1.56; hexosamine 28.90 [plus or minus] 6.34; hexose 38.43 [plus or minus] 9.04; hexuronic acid 5.81 [plus or minus] 1.54. The reported values are not comparable to values obtained by methods of precipitation or on undialyzed urine since variable portions of the substances are either non-precipitable or exist in dialyzable compounds of small molecular weight. Keywords
