Abstract
Higher-order couplings to inelastic excitations of surface vibrations can strongly affect the enhancement of heavy-ion fusion cross sections at sub-barrier energies. Detailed second-order calculations are presented for reactions between different nickel isotopes. The agreement with measured fusion cross sections is considerably improved with respect to conventional coupled channels calculations based on linear couplings. Keywords
