Abstract
Whalley, W. B. 1973. A Note on the Fluctuations of the Level and Size of Strupvatnet, Lyngen, Troms and the Interpretation of Ice Loss on Strupbreen. Norsk geogr. Tidsskr. 27, 39–45. The recent chronology of the ice-dammed lake, Strupvatnet, in the Lyngen Peninsula of Norway, is reconstructed from a report given by the discoverers of the lake in 1898. The height of the dam in 1898 was about 63 m higher than in 1969 and ponded back about 78.4 X 106 m3, most of this evidently being released in a jökulhlaup. The level of the glacier has dropped most rapidly in the last twelve years or so (14 m of the 63 m). This pattern is probably similar to that of other glaciers in north Norway which have had their most rapid retreat since about 1930. The mass of ice lost is computed with reference to the present ablation gradient of 0.95 m ice per 100 m altitude. Some further details of the recent behaviour of the lake are reported.
