Abstract
We discuss the general conditions under which neutrino mass eigenstates with opposite eigenvalues emerge from the most general mass matrix. Our results are derived for an arbitrary number of generations in the presence of both Dirac and Majorana mass terms, and the cases of violation and conservation are both examined.
