Eradication of ResistantStaphylococcus aureuson a Surgical Unit

Abstract
To the Editor: Dr. Bartzokas and colleagues (Nov. 29 issue)1 describe an outbreak of colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a vascular surgical unit. The authors attribute eradication of the organism to a vigorous program of whole-body treatment of patients and staff with topical antiseptics. Their report provides evidence that the carrier state can be eradicated for three months or more with the specific preparation used. We have observed a similar outbreak.Between May 14 and June 18, 1982, methicillin-resistant S. aureus type 52 was recovered from four patients (from blood in three and from a burn wound in one) . . .
