Abstract
This paper describes a relatively new methodology for the assessment of human body composition. The literature is reviewed and the author concludes that electrical impedance is a rapid, relatively inexpensive, safe, noninvasive, portable technique, which requires minimal special training of the operator and causes virtually no inconvenience to the subject. The potential of this technique appears to be unlimited because it is software driven. With further refinement and enhancement of the data base, electrical impedance should be able to provide valid and reliable estimates of percent body fat in clinical and field settings. The possible importance and usefulness of this technique to the Armed Forces is explored. Keywords
