Abstract
SINCE the publication of Gregg's1 paper on congenital cataract following rubella in the mother, the condition has been observed and reported a sufficient number of times to establish it as an entity. The histologic changes in the lens of an embryo after rubella have not been previously described in the literature. Up to the present time a total of 170 cases of rubella during pregnancy have been reported, in 125 of which, or 73 per cent, congenital defects of the lens occurred in the child. In all these cases the mother contracted rubella during the first three months of pregnancy. In no instance in which an ocular defect occurred was the attack of rubella reported to have occurred after the third month. Recently, a single eye of an 8 week old embryo has been received at the Ophthalmic Laboratory of the University of California and it is felt
