Ultrasonic Transducer of Piezoelectric Ceramic for Pulse Driving

Abstract
An ultrasonic transducer of a bimorph-type piezoelectric ceramic, which is mainly used in air for measurement, has high sensitivity but slow transient response because of the high mechanical Q. The authors propose a new construction which consists of a bimorph-type piezoelectric ceramic, a conical diaphragm vibrating in a higher order mode and a damper controlling the mechanical vibration, and they have experimentally confirmed the best dimensions. A faster transient response transducer in air has been developed which has excellent temperature, environmental and aging characteristics.
