Distribution of Cholesterol, Cholesterol Esters and Phospholipid Phosphorus in Normal Blood

Abstract
The distr. of the various lipid factors was studied in the blood of 20 normal subjects, whose ages ranged from 19 35 yrs., and in 20 surgical patients between the ages of 70 and 90 yrs. The two sexes were represented equally in both groups. Various lipid ratios were also calculated. The differences found in the lipid distribution of the 2 age groups were insignificant. In general, the phospholipid values were more constant than the cholesterol values. Some examples of the already known antagonistic properties of phospholipids and cholesterol on various biologic processes are cited and the possible significance of similar studies in pathologic conditions is suggested.
